TMA HOSTS DANISH METEOROLOGICAL INSTITUTE MISSION TO STRENGTHEN TECHNICAL CAPACITY FOR SUSTAINABLE GBON COMPLIANCE

The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA)  welcomed a technical mission from the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) under the Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF) Project aimed at strengthening Tanzania's technical and institutional capacity to sustain compliance with the Global Basic Observing Network (GBON).


Opening the mission in Dodoma, TMA Director General and Vice Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Dr. Ladislaus Chang'a, said the visit marks an important step in enhancing TMA's operational effectiveness and ensuring long-term sustainability of investments made through the SOFF Project.

"Building human resource capacity is equally important as investing in infrastructure. Our goal is to ensure that TMA maintains GBON compliance over the long term while improving the quality and reliability of meteorological services delivered to the nation and the global community," said Dr. Chang'a.


The week-long mission will assess TMA's technical capabilities in key areas including meteorological data exchange, calibration facilities, equipment maintenance, instrument fabrication, and the operation of surface and upper-air observation networks.


Dr. Chang'a commended the continued partnership between TMA, Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), noting that the collaboration is already contributing to the enhancement of TMA services and its role at the regional and International levels. “I trust that the strong partnership that has been built between TMA, DMI and UNDP will continue to strengthen  and deliver highly desirable and long lasting results  and Impacts in the advancement of meteorological services in the Tanzania and across Africa. “ Said Dr Chang’a


Dr. Sebastian Hornum, Project Manager at DMI, emphasized the importance of the mission and its expected outcome. "This mission provides an opportunity to work closely with TMA experts to identify practical solutions that will enhance technical capacity and support sustainable compliance with international observing standards."


Meanwhile, Dr. Abbas Kitogo, Co-Chair of the SOFF Project Technical Coordination Committee and UNDP Representative, reaffirmed UNDP's commitment to supporting the successful implementation of the project.

"The progress achieved so far reflects the admirable cooperation between TMA, DMI and UNDP. UNDP remains fully committed to supporting the successful implementation of the SOFF Project in Tanzania”

The mission will include visits to designated GBON observation stations in Dodoma and Dar es Salaam to assess operational capacities and identify areas for further improvement.
