TMA ENHANCES REGIONAL COOPERATION AND CAPACITY BUILDING IN METEOROLOGICAL SERVICES THROUGH WMO CAPACITY-BUILDING PROGRAMME

The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) through the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) capacity building programne, hosted a regional delegation from the Institut Géographique du Burundi (IGEBU) and the South Sudan Meteorological Services (SSMS) for Practical training and capacity building on Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP), Severe Weather Forecasting, and Quality Management Systems (QMS) held from 12th to 17th April 2026 in Tanzania.
Organised through WMO Climate Risk and Early Warning Systems (CREWS) Project, the visit aimed at strengthening technical capacity of IGEBU and SSMS Experts in meteorological service delivery, particularly in the areas of NWP, QMS and Severe Weather Forecasting.
Opening the programme, TMA Director General and Vice-Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate change (IPCC) Dr. Ladislaus Chang’a, underscored Tanzania’s commitment in strengthening regional cooperation and in providing training and technical support to other NMHS including through various WMO programme.
“This practical visit demonstrates our strong commitment to advancing meteorological services not only in Tanzania, but across Africa, including through sharing our experience, knowledge and technical capacity in various aspects of meteorological services. Through South-South Collaboration and Cross-Learning, we can accelerate the enhancement of our service delivery in the continent and build resilience against weather and climate challenges. We are honored to host you here at TMA, both in Dodoma and Dar es Salaam.” Said Dr Chang'a
Zablon Shilenje a representative from WMO regional office for Africa(RA I) on behalf of Director of WMO Africa, Dr. Agnes Kijazi expressed the appreciation for Tanzania leadership and commitment to regional collaboration.

Permanent representative of Burundi with WMO, Mr Deogratias Babonwanayo commended the initiative and thanked TMA for providing technical support to Burundi “We are grateful for the opportunity to come to TMA and learn from their experience in implementing Quality Management Systems. This visit and the knowledge tha we get, will greatly support the enhancement of our services in Burundi.”
Mr Mojwok Ogawi Modo who is the Permanent representative for South Sudan with WMO also highlighted the importance of the Visit.
“This visit will provide valuable practical insights and strengthen our capacity in QMS, NWP and in Severe Weather Forecasting. We are confident that the lessons learned here will contribute to improving meteorological services in South Sudan.”
This practical visit reflects Tanzania’s ongoing leadership in fostering regional integration and cooperation in meteorological services reinforcing efforts and commitment to strengthening climate services for sustainable development.
