The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) continues to demonstrate strong leadership in strengthening meteorological services across East Africa, following the implementation of resolutions from the East African Community (EAC) Heads of Meteorological Services meeting held in Entebbe, Uganda from 23rd to 24th May 2024.
As part of this effort, Dr. Mafuru Kantamla, Manager of the Central Forecasting Office, conducted a training workshop on severe weather forecasting for the South Sudan Meteorological Services (SSMS). The training held in Juba from 16th to 19th June 2025, brought together operational forecasters to develop and strengthen their skills in generating five-days weather forecasts and issuing early warnings for high-impact weather events.
In a parallel initiative, TMA Quality Management System (QMS) experts, Dr. Geofrid Chikojo and Mr. Danford Nyenyema, conducted the Inception Phase for QMS implementation at Burundi’s Meteorological Service (IGEBU) from 27th to 31st January 2025 and 9th to 13th June 2025. The experts facilitated IGEBU on the preparation and establishment of key QMS documents, procedures, and internal auditing processes.
These missions were carried out in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), supported through the Climate Risk and Early Warning Systems East Africa (CREWS EA) Project.
Commenting on these developments, Dr. Ladislaus Chang’a, Acting Director General of TMA and Vice Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), said:
“TMA is happy and committed to contribute in strengthening the provision of meteorological services including early warning systems in the continent in the spirit of not leaving any one behind, taping in our differentiated capabilities and using our individual and collective strengths. These missions to South Sudan and Burundi are consistent with TMA Vision and are examples of our shared commitment to strengthen the Implementation of the Agenda 2063, the Africa we want, and the World Meteorological Organization Strategic Plan (2024 – 2027).”
